The Match of the Ages

40

Thesis: We like conflict and comparing distinctions - left or right, right and wrong, etc. The book of Romans helps us make a right connection between our heart and brain in proper theology . . . . which "Adam" do you put before God for your salvation?

I - ADAM'S LEGACY - ORIGINAL SIN (v. 12)

  • Sin started with Adam
  • Death entered due to sin
  • Adam offspring inherited sin (All sin)
  • Sin imputed to all

II - EVIDENCE OF ORIGINAL SIN (v. 13-14)

  • Death reigned from Adam to Moses before Law
  • Adam was a type, representative of humanity

III - CONTRASTING PARALLELISM (v. 15-21)

  • Adam sin = judgement, Jesus gift = grace
  • Adam sin = condemnation, Jesus work = covering
  • Adam disobedience (death) vs Jesus obedience (life)
  • Law revealed sin, grace revealed forgiveness
  • sin reigned to death, grace reigned to eternal life

CONCLUSION: Adam representing all humanity isn't unfair. He was created absolutely perfect and free and chose to sin, none of us would have done better. God's grace in Jesus is amazing in that he gave us his perfect life and took our sinful life so that we might have eternal life!
