The Best Is Yet To Come
Series The Word Became Flesh
In John 2:1-12, Jesus performs 'the first of his signs' by turning water into wine at a wedding in Cana. This is a marvellous provision for the bridegroom of that wedding who would have been more than a little embarrassed by the shortfall in his catering. However, John calls this event not merely a miracle, but a sign. Jesus' action here points to something else, something other than just the miracle of water becoming wine. This was a revelation of Jesus' glory.
A closer look at this sign reveals that, in Jesus, the best is yet to come. Those who tasted this wine recognised that it was better than any other they had tasted so far. More than this, it came from water poured into large jars used for the rites of purification. This sign points to a new and better way of cleansing and of worship - a way opened up by Jesus himself. In him, the old has passed, the new has come. Come! Taste and see that the Lord is good. Believe in him and enter into this new way of life in his name.
