Introduction
The important questions: What does it mean to be a Christian? What is Christianity?
Formulating the answer:
• Hebrews 6:10-12 & 10:21-24
• 1 Thessalonians 1:3 & 5:8
• Colossians 1:3-8
The ancient summary: FAITH, HOPE, & LOVE
I. FAITH: belief in something; conviction of a truth.
a. Col. 1:4, 6 – “Faith in Christ Jesus”
b. Matt. 5:3-6 – Conviction of certain truths
c. Matt. 5:13-16, 19 & Col. 1:6 – True Faith produces fruit or works
II. HOPE: expectation of good; joyful expectation of eternal salvation.
a. Col. 1:5 – “hope which is laid up for you in heaven”
b. Matt. 5:7-12 – Hope pulls us toward heaven
III. LOVE: affection; good will; benevolence toward someone
a. Col. 1:4, 8 – “love for the saints” & “love in the Spirit”
b. Matt. 5:7, 10, 16 – How our love for God is known
c. Matt. 22:36-40 – Love for the Lord & for others
