The Sacrifice the Satisfied

31

Jesus is our advocate, our defender. How can Jesus be an effective defender of those who are still sinning?

  1. V2 "He himself is the propitiation for our sins"., He is the "appeasement", the "satisfying". Martin Luther translate it a "mercy seat" based on the redemptive history.

  2. Why do we need propitiation
a.James 2:10/God's wrath needs to be satisfied
b It is where punishment and forgiveness kiss
    c. God will only be satisfied when all sins have been paid for and the wages of sin is an eternal death. John 3:36/1 Thess 1:10/Psalm 7:11/Ezekiel 18:20
    d. There never can be expiation, guilt removed from us until there is propitiation, satisfaction brought before God.
    e. Isaiah 53:5-9 - God determined what sacrifice would propitiate Him. The death of Christ was the satisfaction of divine justice.
    f. Hebrews 7:26-27
    g. Hebrews 10:17 - God is so satisfied by the sacrifice of Christ.
    h. Jesus was it! No need for any more offerings. Rom 3:26
    i. 1 John 4:10 - I was not the propitiation of a loving Christ that won the love of God, but the Love of God that sent Christ to be the propitiation.
    j. God is Just and Holy and Loving; out of that comes His grace, mercy and forgiveness

  3. The verse does not teach universalism
a.Galatians 2:9 - a Jew speaking to Jews who understand completely propitiation
    b. Understood Yom Kippur/The day of Atonement/They understood that there is not more sacrifices.

The design of the atonement is the END of the atonement. Isaiah 46:8. God purposed a propitiation on behalf of His children and He accomplished it whether His children were part of the nation of Israel or the whole word.
