I. Mediator Defined in its Biblical Context…
A. Literally the word means a “Go-between.”
B. One who acts as a guarantee (surety), Hebrews 8:6; 9:15; 12:24
C. One who mediates between two parties in dispute…

  1. Human mediation is often compromised and pragmatic…
  2. Jesus is the perfect mediator, uncompromised… Isaiah 53:9 “…There was no deceit in His mouth.” John 17:4

II. The Great Necessity We Have for a Mediator…
Consider Job's lament in Job 9:32-33…
A. There is Our Great Distance from God…

  1. The “creator/creature” distinction, Isaiah 55: 9; Psalm 113: 4-6; I John 1: 5
  2. If we simply looked at God in His essence we would be confused and lost…

B. There is Our Great Difference with God…

  1. God is angry at the sinner and we are sinners…
  2. All men know these things to be true…Romans 1:18-19, 32; 2:1-2.
  3. Our difference with God is ethical (not metaphysical)…Romans 8:7
  4. God is against the sinner, Psalm 5:4-5
  5. He is provoked, Hebrews 12:29; Isaiah 33:14.

C. There is the Good News… “One mediator…' Acts 4:12

III. The Mediator Identified and Qualified… He is the God-man…
A. He possesses all the attributes of humanity completely and perfectly…

  1. Our salvation depends upon it…Hebrews 2:14-15
  2. It is taught clearly throughout the Gospel record… i.e. Luke 2:8-14, 40…
  3. He is without sin…I Peter 2:22, 24; I John 3:5

B. He Possesses a Divine nature, i.e. I Timothy 1:2, 12, 14, 17…
C. He became for us sinners… Galatians 4:4
