To this point Paul has treated the problem of factions at Corinth in a general way, addressing himself to the issue of natural-mindedness as the underlying cause of the Corinthian divisions. Now in the third chapter he turned his attention to the Corinthians themselves, applying his previous observations to their situation, and specifically to the role he and Apollos played in their factions.
