Luke 18:9-14 - The Pharisee and the Tax Collector

1. Pharisees

• Revered leaders amongst the Jewish people
• Strict observers of the Jewish laws and traditions
• "trusted in themselves that they were righteous"
• Matthew 23:1-12

2. Tax collectors

• Employed by Romans
• Despised by the Jews
• Matthew 9:9-13

3. Prayer

• Who were these men praying to?
• What attitude did they have?
• What did their prayers achieve?

4. How do we pray humbly?

• Remember YOU are a sinner
• Remember WHO you are praying to
• Remember WHY you can come before God in prayer
• When God answers prayer give HIM the glory - not yourself
• "everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbled himself will be exalted" (Luke 9:14)

5. The Perfect Humble Prayer

• Matthew 26:36-42
