The Mortification of Jesus
33
These verses speak of the depth of humilation and ignomy of Christ during his eartly ministry. He was made to feel as "a worm", and not a man. Those who follow him (especially his ministers) will also endure a sense of humiliation and shame at the hand of men. Being made to feel contomptible in the eyes of men is the dying (Gk. mortification) of Jesus accomplished in believers (2 Cor. 4:10). The sermon text draws contrast between a worm and a man. There is also the contrast between the way men see the humiliated servant and the way God sees his suffering. There is further a contrast of reward to come.
