Why should we not follow the example of unbelief of the Jews?
- Because the Word of God is living and active …
- Because we live in the presence of a God before whom all things are naked
II - The All-Sympathizing Mercy of Christ v.14-16
a) The passage logical structure
Major premise: a great high priest in the heavens
Minor premise: a high priest who can sympathize with us
1st commandment: let us hold fast our confession
2nd commandment: let us draw near (TO GOD)
An overarching purpose: that we may receive mercy and find grace
b) The argument: Jesus is God's Exalted and Sympathizing High Priest
c) JESUS THE EXALTED PRIEST
- Priests were mediators between God and men
- The high priest, was the Chief of all priests and a descendant of Aaron
- The priests in the Old Testament served by seasons.
- The greatest sacrifice took place on the Day of Atonement - Yom Kippur
- The steps to the holy of hollies:
- When the sacrifice ended, the High Priest came out and the people dismissed
a) Jesus is not just a high priest, but a Great High Priest
b) He trespassed the heavens.
c) He is not a son of Aaron, but “The Son of God”
CONCLUSION:
a) When was the last time, we extended mercy to someone?
b) What is the greatest mercy do you believe we can extend a person?
c) How can you and I extend the mercy right after we pray and this service is over?
