The use of the Old Testament in the New

315

NT usage of OT reflects how the OT was viewed.

  1. Assumptions of the NT writers when they quote from the OT
    i) Christ and the apostles treat the OT as the Word of God. Scripture histories are treated as fact. Historical accuracy is assumed and extends to the account of creation. OT absolutely reliable in every respect.
    ii) Unity with the New
    iii) Continuing fixed moral law
Continuing authority of the ten commandments confirmed in the New. Also principles of general equity – the law given to Moses contained principles of civil and church government. Distinctions are made in the New due to the abrogation of ceremonial laws and the clearer demarcation between church and state - OT principles applied accordingly, but the moral law (the ten commandments) shown to be automatically regarded as permanent.
iv) Only one way of salvation since the Fall.
Major doctrines of the faith can be established from all passages in the NT which refer to the OT Scriptures.
    v) Continuity of the church of God
Covenant keeping & breaking still stands. Heb 3:7 (Psa 95) Hebrews uses OT history to demonstrate this.
vi) Continuing obligation for the church. One standard of holiness from the Old into New.
  2. The manner of NT interpretation and application of OT. Do the NT writers interpret OT passages according to context and setting? Liberal scholars argue they do not. Eight examples from Scripture examined.
  3. Assumption of NT writers that believers will be readers of the OT.
