We Don't Need a Better Lawyer

We often see in the news of the day some incident that ought to bring our thoughts to our dear Lord Jesus. In all things, He far excels even the best of this world.

Last week we saw the drama of Rodney Reed, a death row inmate, saved just five days before he was ordered to die. His valiant lawyers worked for years to find new evidence and try to convince the courts to listen to them.

Due to their hard work, Mr. Reed was suddenly spared execution, and his case sent back to court for further proceedings. Much of the state's case has collapsed, and new witnesses support his claim of innocence.

Our criminal justice system is very broken, with too many innocent people being wrongfully convicted. The helpless accused has no power to stand up to the state, which has endless resources and great power advantage over the accused.

A key problem is the inability of poor defendants to afford the best lawyers, ones who can penetrate these cases and bring to light the truth.

Mr. Reed finally got the very best lawyers, who volunteered to help him.

This huge imbalance in power reminds us of our pitiful standing before almighty God, Who has all power, and knows all things, and does all things according to His will.

Poor Job lamented his inability to plead with God. God had laid His heavy hand on Job, and he could not understand why. He cried out, "oh, that one might plead for a man with God!"

No matter who Job nominated to represent him before God, he too would be a mere man, a creature, whose standing before the Almighty was as nothing.

But then came Jesus to us! The incarnation makes Him both man and God, and He can stand as our advocate as an equal before God!
