The Savior of the World

90

The Savior of the World (Jn 4:1-29)
Intro: His own received him not
"He came to his own and his own received him not" (1:11, KJV). But he is received in Samaria.

Jesus, "needed to go through Samaria," that is it clearly involves God's plan (see 3:7,14,30, 4:4,20,24, 9:4, 10:16, 12:34, 20:9).

Exposition

  1. What is this gift of God, this living water (v. 11-15)?
"Living water" is what we call "running water" (see Song 4:15, Jer 2:13, Zech 14:8, etc.).
    See John 7:37-39.

  2. Who is this who speaks (v. 16-26)?
"Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance" (Mk 2:17).

Application: This teaches you what really matters, and how you should approach God.
"You seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you" (Jn 6:26-27).

See Jer 2:13; also Ps 42:1-2, Lk 12:15.

"The Jews would have willingly received a Messiah patterned after their own carnal desires. Had Christ presented Himself only as a Deliverer from their temporal troubles, gratified their fleshly lusts, and not interfered with their selfish plans, He had received a royal welcome from them. But for the Holy One of God they had no heart" (Pink, Atonement).

Conclusion: Many come and believe (v. 39-42)
