The Call of Matthew

38

Matthew is introduced to us as Levi, his Jewish name (cf. Luke 5:27). Matthew was a tax-collector, a despised publican (Mark 2:16; cf. Matt. 18:17; Luke 18:9-14). It was his job to collect taxes for the Roman government.

The publicans were known for being hard-hearted, crooked extortioners. In the NT, they are always lumped together with the worst of sinners (cf. Matt. 9:10, 11; 21:31, 32). But the Lord saved Matthew.

  1. HE OBEYED THE CALL (Mark 2:14).
  2. HE “LEFT ALL” (LUKE 5:28).
  3. HE TRIED TO GET HIS FRIENDS SAVED(Mark 2:15-20).

Suppose Matthew had not responded to the call from Jesus? Then today there would be no Gospel of Matthew in our Bible! You might not think God can use you but I'm sure many thought the same thing about Matthew.

Following Jesus requires faith. Following Jesus means taking a stand for Him.
Following Jesus means to accept Him as your Lord and Saviour.
Have you done that?
