Of Crowns, Covenant, and Cornerstone
Series Isaiah
60
In Isaiah 28:1-29 we are shown 2 instances of God speaking to His people who scoff at
His word.
I. A word to prideful Ephraim who ignores Yahweh's word.
A. Drunken Ephraim's proud crown will be cast down (vs. 1-4).
B. The remnant's crown will be Yahweh Himself (vs. 5-6).
C. Ephraim's drunken priests and prophets:
- Stumble in giving judgment (vs. 7-8).
- Arrogantly think Yahweh's word is "blah, blah, blah" (vs. 9-10).
- So Yahweh speaks to His people through a foreign nation (vs. 11-
13).
II. A word to the rulers of Jerusalem not to scoff at Yahweh's word.
A. You have sought refuge in lies and a covenant of death (vs. 14-15).
B. But your only hope of refuge is the Cornerstone I've laid in Zion (v. 16).
C. So I will act:
- Restoring justice and righteousness (v. 17).
- Annulling the covenant you've made (v. 18a).
- Beating you down with the scourge (v. 18a-19).
D. So you will know: - Your refuge and shelter will not protect you from judgment (v. 20).
- I will act in the strange and alien way of using My power against
you instead of on your behalf (v. 21). - Not to scoff at Yahweh's word of destruction (v. 22).
E. A parable of sowing and reaping to show Yahweh will administer the
proper amount of judgment until He harvests His remnant (vs. 23-29).
