To escape me the wretched man flew to Atheism, and resumed a portion of his former atrocious impiety. ' For what I know,' he cried, this may be all a bug-bear to terrify us ; how can I ascertain that there is any such Being as God ? I know no such thing; nor do I know how to set about to find it out.' What am I to do now ? I thought with myself. Must I go through the arguments for the existence of a God with this dying sinner, who should be invoking the aid of a Saviour with prayers, and tears, and groans ? It is impossible ; it is useless if it were possible ; and Scripture he will disclaim altogether.
