The Beginning of John
Series Introducing the Gospels
33
The Jews used the name “The Word” as a reverent replacement for the name of Jehovah, of Yahweh… The Greeks used the title as a way of referencing the reason behind the universe. For both the anthem John writes in the first 13 verse of his gospel conformed to their set notions of the Word… But then John 1:14 tore those notions all apart. It said “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us…” This was an instantaneous invasion of God into human space and it was a threat to the comfortable space they had, with their concepts, tried to place between themselves and God. The idea that Christ came to earth is really very disrupting to those who wish for a God who inspires but doesn't interfere with their lives.
