The Sacrificial Lamb of God

63

The presence of slain lambs which served as substitutionary sacrifices for the sins of the people was a constant, even daily occurrence in the Old Testament worship given through the Law of Moses. Isaiah 53 shows that the coming suffering Servant of the Lord was a person who would be "stricken for the transgressions" of the Lord's people. John the Baptist understood this and when the Spirit came on Jesus at his baptism, John knew this was the prophesied Messiah and Redeemer and he declared him, "Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world." We, as well as all the peoples of the earth, must behold him in repentance and faith if we would have our sins removed and receive eternal life.
