The Earth: Formless, Void, and Darkness

The Earth at creation: formless, void, dark. Did the matter of the Earth exist and God happened along and formed it, or did God create matter? See Exodus 20:11. The words for formless and void are used elsewhere in scripture, to talk about what God would, and did, make life like on Earth for the Israelites when they disobeyed and did not trust Him.
