A series of oracles against the nations begins in chapter 13 with Babylon. Babylon is that anti-city, the power of man against God. Its days began after the flood when Nimrod established a tower. Its end is made clear here.

Because Babylon represents all world powers of any time and place, it is imperative for people in our day to listen to the prophet's message. God will judge the nations. God will destroy his enemies in the fires of hell.

But today is the day of salvation, not of eschatological judgement. The gospel is held forth so that all who hear may turn to Christ and be saved by his grace alone.

What will it be for you? Will you wail and howl on that Day, or will you rejoice knowing that God's judgment has passed you by in Christ as you trust in him by faith?
