In spite of the taunts of the mockers then and now, Peter wants his readers to think properly, with their beliefs and lifestyle formed by the teaching of the prophets and apostles, especially in regards to the certain hope of the return of Christ, A corollary hope for the Christian is the destruction of evil. Previous judgments by God, such as the Flood, were precursors of the great Judgment coming, and testify that we live in a moral universe. Though unbelievers may mock us, we should warn them of the coming wrath, as well as pray for their enlightenment and repentance.
