Gospel Freedom

Laying down the foundation for the breathtaking statement of verse 1 that the people who are in Christ are not condemned, the inspired Apostle Paul expounds the Gospel truth in verse 2 that those who are in Christ have been freed from their bondage to the law of sin and death. This Gospel freedom is liberty from the futile effort to secure perfect righteousness through the works of the flesh. The Spirit of God applies the truth of the Gospel to the heart of a sinner and causes that dead sinner to live in Christ Jesus. This text lays the axe of Biblical truth to the root of the tree of perfectionism and puts the cause of Christian happiness on the ground of the gracious intervention of God.
