Be Merciful
Series Exposition of Luke
170
The command to be merciful is particularly applied to the issues of the restraint of interpersonal judgement and forgiveness. While the Jesus does not forbid judgement universally (as many unbelievers quote the verse), yet there is the restriction from judging unrighteously (according to our standard, not God's - John 5:30), hypocritically (while we are doing the same thing - Romans 2:1), only by appearance (rather than finding out issues of the heart - 1Corinthians 4:5), without mercy (James 2:13), and judging as if we are in the place of God (Romans 14:4). We also see that with the same measure we either forgive or don't forgive, Jesus says with the same measure God will either forgive or not forgive us.
