Divine Intervention & Sincere Obedience

179

In this Sunday School class, we see the Lord intervene precisely at the right time to both validate Abraham's obedience of faith & to rescue Isaac. We need to know that the Lord is attentive to us & is poised to intervene to be our present help in time of trouble. In this class we also hear a warning not to settle for sincerity instead of actual obedient action. The test for Abraham was not a command to be sincere, but to actually sacrifice Isaac. If sincereity were the issue, Abraham could've stopped far short of actually doing what he was commanded, contenting himself that he was subjectively sincere while yet not actually doing, acting, obeying. In our day of feminized, psychologized religiosity, we, with our inclination to self-deception, need to beware lest we settle for mere emotional sincerity rather than actual obedience. It is not those who merely say "Lord, Lord" but those who do the will of the Father who demonstrate saving grace & living faith & enter into the Kingdom. In a day of thorny soil religion, this is a timely warning indeed.
