1 Timothy: An Introduction

Paul's first letter to Timothy is vital if we are to understand how the church functions in a post-apostolic time, that is, after the foundation of the apostles and prophets (Eph. 2:20) is laid. In the opening verses we find the familiar pattern of Paul's writings, yet with some important features foreshadowing his coming instruction. The apostle writes as he does to anchor every word that follows in the authority and mercy of Christ himself, an authority that is mediated to God's people through faithful servant leaders such as Paul and Timothy, who proclaim the word of truth to Christ's bride. Let us learn how we may receive and live out what it is to be the household of the living God!
