I am the Bread of Life: Part 2

23

In today's passage, Jesus answers an unspoken question. After the Feeding of the Five Thousand and Jesus Walking on the Water, a smaller, but substantial, crowd continues to seek Jesus and asks Him a series of questions, which controls the dialogue through John 6:34. Then, in Verses 36-37, Jesus answers questions that they might should have asked and that other people are certainly going to ask: “What do we conclude when the masses reject our Savior?” and “How can I continue believing when those around me, even in the church, are not?”

John, the last living Apostle, had observed over his long ministry how many people rejected the Messiah. At this point in Jesus' earthly ministry the crowds begin to dwindle. We see Jesus' words sift the crowds so that at the end of Chapter 6, we see only a small number of true disciples. The reason the multitudes don't believe is not a lack of knowledge, or that they had not seen convincing evidence. There's something else going on that keeps them from believing.
