Two Master Disaster

53

It has been said, "Touch their gods and they will kill you". That is the way it is with all of us. If people touch the things we love, the ugly comes out. The word of God will mess with your idols because idols are an insult to God and damaging to those who worship them. Idols change your attitude toward anyone who stands in the way of your enjoyment of them. Anger, rather than repentance, passionlessness rather than passion. Then, in this context, Jesus speaks about the glorious dawning of the kingdom age, and the way in which people are now forcing their way into it. The Spirit is waking people up to their to their disastrous idolatry and granting them eyes to see the kingdom! Idols make you sleepy and legalistic, avoiding passion and vulnerability. Because Jesus touched on the pharisees' idols, they were angry. But in order to protect their idol, they had to get angry with Him for a different reason. But suddenly there is a verse on divorce. Because the pharisees who were very tight on the law, were very loose on divorce! Breaking the law they are claiming to keep. To escape this, you need a new heart!
