Jesus sends His followers to fearlessly share His love in a world that is often hostile. Sheep need a shepherd. Sheep are not bright and are very vulnerable, if left alone, they will die. Jesus compared people to sheep. Jesus said there were workers who were needed and then He sent out His disciples. When we see a need and we pray to God to fulfill that need, we might be the ones to take care of the need. Though Jesus sent His followers, Jesus put them in a very vulnerable position. Even though the disciples were used by God to raise the dead, heal the sick, and cast out demons, the most exciting thing is that God had forgiven their sins. If we don’t realize how much Jesus has done in forgiving our sins, then perhaps we don’t know Jesus. People who reject the Messiah will be worse off than those who never knew Him. We should be shrewd, smart looking for a way to help others and not naive, just believing everything that someone else says is true. It does not matter how people treat us, it matters how they respond to Jesus. We don’t need to be popular, we need to be faithful. The way that people treat Christians is the way they treat Jesus and Jesus takes that personally. As we serve the Lord, and people receive us, they are receiving the Lord. We are not to be surprised by the hostility and we are not to be afraid either.
