Small And Despised
Series Obadiah
The effect of God's warnings to Edom was not deliverance. Rather, Edom was simply hardened in rebellion against God. Even after being made great in fulfillment of Isaac's prophecy, God made Edom small. The nation of Idumea was great before Israel's ascension to greatness and was great even after the dispersion of Israel. Yet now the posterity of Edom is unknown.
Uses: Let no man measure God's favors by possessions, territories, multitudes of citizens, or might. God gave all these things to Esau whom he hated. Rather, let men consider and not allow such prosperity to come to them at the expense of ignoring or abandoning godliness.
The two great temptations that Edom faced were riches and power. They abused both to oppress their neighbors, and especially to oppress Jacob (Israel). Pride will have its fall. Those who exalt themselves are despised by God who sets his face against them. It is no small matter to have God's messengers set against us for our sins.
