Art and Idolatry

The first and second commandments both forbid worshipping idols or false gods, but the second commandment goes further in that it forbids worshipping the true God in false ways. God sets the boundaries of what is acceptable to him and we have liberty only within the boundaries he has determined. What, then, is the place of the arts in the Christian life? Is there any place, or is art in any of its many forms simply a way to bring worldliness into the church through the back door? What is the relationship of art to worship and to idolatry?
