David's Cry for Salvation-pt 2

58

A. David's Need (Psalm 3:7a)

  1. Arise, O LORD
    a. This phrase appears seven times in scripture; each time appealing to Jehovah's strength.
    b. It was David's attempt to call God to action. This was the first plea for God's involvement in his current predicament. God's power was acknowledged in verse 3, with His power invoked here in verse 7.
  2. Save me, O my God—He was the LORD, but He was also David's God. A personal relationship.
  3. Note: David opened the psalm by expressing the greatness of his vast enemies (verses 1-2), but closes the psalm by expressing the greatness of a vast God. Notice how things change when we pray!!!

B. David's Experience (Psalm 3:7b "thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the cheek bone; thou hast broken the teeth of the ungodly"
Another of David's Prayers—this prayer was when Saul's men watched the house of Michal to kill him (1 Samuel 19:11), so it took place before Psalm 3).
Psalm 58:6 Break their teeth, O God, in their mouth: break out the great teeth of the young lions, O LORD.

  1. Psalm 3: Thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the cheekbone.
  2. Psalm 3: Thou hast broken the teeth of the ungodly.
  3. Note: David's experience with God's faithfulness in the past, now has him expecting God's faithfulness in the present (We can learn from experience. See Romans 5:3-5 with James 1:2-4)
    C. God's Faithfulness (Psalm 3:8)
  4. Salvation belongeth unto the LORD (physical).
    a. To say that salvation is in God's possession is only half the truth.
    b. The other facet of this passage was to acknowledge that it was up to God whether or not it was given to David (see Psalm 62:11-12; Hebrews 10:30).
