II. The Purpose of the Law 7:7
A. The Historic Reformed View of the Three Purposes of the Law
According to John Calvin, and the majority of those who came after him, the Law has
three uses: The Pedagogical, the civil, and the didactic.
1. The Law teaches and convicts men of sin.
2. The Civil Use.
3. The Didactic Use.
This is the one that Lutherans – and many modern Christians do not agree with: that God's Moral Law is a standard that still stands for Christians – to show us what is good and right.
B. Is the Law Sin?
C. The Law Reveals Sin
III. The Law Considered Negatively 7:8-11
A. There is the promise of life to those who keep the Law perfectly – yet no one does – so the law brings death. 7:4-6; 3:19-20
B. Does the Law cause more Sin?
IV. The Law Considered Positively 7:12
A. Holy
B. Just (righteous)
C. Good

To the Christian – we find this Law written on our hearts – and we agree with it because of the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit.
