Series Sermons in Exodus
Mahatma Gandhi once said, "an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind". He was talking about the need for all the vengeance, wanton destruction, and excessive punishment for crimes. People who read the Bible without any understanding will look at passage such as the one before us and point to it as proof of how evil God really is. They will follow the thinking of Gandhi and declare God to be cruel, but context is everything. During the time that God had given His laws things were far worse and His laws were meant to bring balance and be the first steps in the right direction. Steps mind you because even today we still need to be mindful of ourselves. How often do we overdo our anger? Someone says or does something that offends us and we blow it out of proportion, hold on to grudges from years past, vow to never speak to them again, and when faced with them turn and walk away instead of dealing with the problem?
