God's Election of Grace

It should be readily acknowledge that this doctrine has divided Christendom into two great camps. But this division is not whether there is an election made by God of some. Almost everyone agrees that there is an elect people of God. The disagreement is over what it means. So given this great divide how else can we hope to resolve this issue for ourselves other than resorting to the word of God?
