The Earth Desecrated and Demolished

In the sermon today I will continue our exposition of Isaiah. The theme of our present section is the “burden of the Lord” against the nations that surround Israel and Judah. However, in this section (chapters 24-27) the focus shifts to the nations of the world as a whole. And in this sermon (chapter 24) the emphasis is God's judgment upon the earth. This chapter has been called “Isaiah's Little Apocalypse,” and that is indeed quite a good description. In fact, many of the verses of the chapter will remind us of the book of Revelation. What I will do in this sermon is develop Isaiah's theme under four headings, each one of which is quite distressing in nature. This is not a pretty picture of the outcome of this world. Contrary to the age-old and modern sentiment, we are not really getting better and better. Moreover, we cannot do whatever we want, however long we want to do it, and get away with it forever. There is a day of reckoning coming – and God will have the final say! Once again the message will come through: everyone should trust in the Lord alone! May the Lord be pleased to bless the His word to our hearts!
