Opposition to the Work

It might not be thought that this weak people would occasion opposition but they do and quickly they are facing adversity. We can see how in Old Testament times there were many opponents to the Lord’s ancient people. Behind them all lay the devil and his efforts to destroy the work. There are enemies that face us still. There are the militant atheists as well as those who would not go so far as that but whose lives still show that they do not value the Bible or regulate their lives by the laws of God. Behind these enemies is the enemy of souls who is at work again.

The tactics of the enemy run the same through the ages. We see that there is the anger that the opponents of the work feel. In tandem with it is their mockery of the work. They group together and aim to attack and cause confusion. But we do well to remember that the enemy always exaggerates his own strength. We should always remember that the Lord loves the church. When we pray there is a sympathetic ear turned towards us. Similarly we are to keep watch for the work of the enemy and be aware of his schemes.
