The Table of the Lord Or The Table of Demons

Paul warns us that we cannot enjoy fellowship with Jesus at His Table & then sit at the table of demons. The libertine Corinthians evidently thought they had the freedom to eat & drink before the Lord & before demons in pagan temples as well. We learn that Jesus is really present at His Supper & that there really are demons involved in idolatrous aspects of pagan culture that we must avoid so that we do not cause a brother to stumble nor arouse the jealousy of our Lord. To sit at the Lord's Table is to be given privileges of covenant intimacy. We cannot insult our God by being intimate with Him & then flirting with the demonically driven paganism of our Corinth-like culture.
