Christ's Love: Not Self-Love

258

We hear today that we should learn to love ourselves, accept ourselves, forgive ourselves - & then we will have a healthy self-image. Such self-centered psychologizing is foreign to Scripture which informs us that our problem is that we love ourselves too - so much as to prohibit us from loving God! Selfishness lies at the root of the Fall, is central to false Pharisaic works-religion, characteristic of the demonic wisdom of this age. How can this tap-root sin be overcome? By refusing to be loved by self & rather seek to be loved by Christ. We were made to be loved. We cannot meet this need in ourselves. It is the love of Christ that we need - not the love of self. I can't love me the way Christ can love me! In His love, I can learn to love the Lord with all my heart & to love my neighbor. In His love, I can love others - not selfishly, but sacrificially, even as Jesus loves me.
