Today's podcast starts off with a description of a strange and brutal ceremony called the Indemnity Stick Ceremony. We talked about the concept of indemnity in an earlier episode. It's the idea that Unification Church members can purge their past sins and even Satan from themselves by causing themselves discomfort. This can be done by simply denying themselves fleshly desires as well as physically punishing themselves.
In the indemnity stick ceremony, we see the theme of purging sin and Satan through physical pain. In this ceremony, the groom beats his future wife across the buttocks with a thick stick or bat, as hard as he can, three times. Does this sound like something that would come from the God of the Bible? After he has beaten his wife, she is given the opportunity to return the favor by whacking him three times as well. Is this not one of the strangest things you have ever heard?
