John wrote repeatedly in chapter 3 that we should love one another. We know that we have passed out of death into life if we love one another: 3:10, 11, 14, 16, 23 (read aloud). However, this love is not to be without discernment. In chapter 4 John continues writing about the importance of love (4b), but he also tells us to be shrewd about it (4a). We are to beware of spiritual deception and overcome the spirit of antichrist (4a).
