Keeping The Attention Of Our Hearers

Lectures To My Students: When the preacher first settles into his pastorate, he cannot expect that his congregation will give him that solemn, earnest attention which those obtain who stand up like fathers among their own children – endeared to their people by a thousand memories and esteemed for age and experience. Our whole life must be such as to add weight to our words so that in after years we shall be able to wield the invincible eloquence of a long-sustained character, and obtain not merely the attention, but also the affectionate respect of our flock.
