Feasting or Fasting

Traditional Judaism was totally inflexible and unable to contain the new wine of God's kingdom. Instead of rejoicing in the arrival and action of the Kingdom and joining 'the party' they questioned Jesus about His followers habit of not fasting. The new reality that Jesus brought could not be contained by the categories by which they lived and by which they sought to contain God and justify their existence.

Jesus could never be a mere patch on our well-rehearsed way of keeping God's reality at a distance. The fermenting, dynamic life of the gospel of God's Kingdom requires new wine skins. The feast and the dancing have begun. The Bridegroom has come at last and nothing can be the same anymore!
