Hebrews Authorship & Introduction

256

We believe it is important in the church to combine topical preaching with expository teaching through the scriptures. For the next several weeks in our first hour Bible Study we will be conducting an expository verse-by-verse study through the New Testament book of Hebrews; one of the most profound books in the Bible, and also one of the most theologically deep. Because this epistle contains the most complete teaching in the Bible on the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ, and some of the clearest teaching in the Bible on the deity of Christ, on the purpose and function of the cross and the eternal nature of Christ’s atonement, and on the ongoing, high-priestly ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ as our advocate before the Father, it is also one of the most important books in the Bible for every Christian to study and understand.

That said, this wonderful book is also one of the most avoided by Christians today, due to its reliance upon the reader’s understanding of the Old Testament and also because of the apparent difficulties and enigmas presented to those who only skim its surface and fail to humble themselves to plum its depths and study it with an obedient heart, as we will try to do in this study.

This opening message to the study examines both the authorship and the central theme of the book, which is the superiority of the New Covenant to the Old, and the absolute supremacy of Christ to all of life.
