The Gathering of the Church for the Lord's Supper

85

In this class we look at the Bibilcal witness that indicates that the church actually gathered for the purpose of eating the Lord's Supper. Paul speaks to this purpose in 1 Cor 11 & Luke in Act 20:7. It is challenging to distinguish the several kinds of eating events that Luke mentions, but it is evident that the church gathered to break bread & it was in that context that Paul then preached. This is an intriguing & challenging paradigm in view of the fact that most of us gather for the purpose of the preaching (or the music - which is another subject). But were we to gather for the purpose of the Supper, we would be gathering unto the presence of Christ & then, in conscious union with Him, we would exercise our gifts & engage in woship making Him & His presence & His word the prominent focus. Would such a construct protect us from having the church inadvertently become the preacher's personality cult? Do we gather to the preacher or to Christ?
