The sixth commandment requires us to preserve human life because it is God's own right to give and to take life. Thereby, it forbids us from taking anyone's life, including our own, or doing anything to endanger life:
Forbidden to end our own life
Forbidden to end our neighbour's life
Forbidden to do any harm to human life
