Pastor Chronister begins this sermon with a review of the account in Numbers 20 that he set up for us last Sunday. Most people would think that Moses and Aaron are conspiring against God in this passage. But… as pastor explains, this just does not fit the description of them. So, the question is what is really going on here? Let me set it up for you. The people want water. God tells Moses to take the Rod and go talk to the Rock. But… instead Moses talks to the people harshly and then he takes the Rod and smites (kills) the Rock, not just once but twice. Confused yet? Man, I sure was. Because when you read this passage, all kinds of questions should come flying off the page at you. This passage just doesn't make sense.
But here's the really good news. When a passage doesn't make sense, there is usually a great treasure buried there for those who are willing to dig. But if you're like me, you need someone to at least tell you where to start digging. That's the wonderful thing about our pastor. He will stand there in God's Word and dig right alongside of us. You see, in most passages of Scripture that we don't really understand, we don't have to say, “Well… I guess I'll understand it when I get to heaven.” We don't have to, BUT… now that we know there's a glorious treasure to be found, we can say, “Give me that shovel. Now, where did you say to start digging?” And God's Word becomes new again and again.
It's a rare pastor that's willing to do this because it's not all warm and fuzzy. Now come with us and let's explore the riches which are in Christ Jesus. Open your TextBook and press play.

PS. Thank you for listening. Feel free to call our pastor with questions.
