The Righteousness of Faith

70

I - A repetition of 9:1-4 – Paul's heart for Israel
a)Paul's missionary heart to Israel 1
b)His motivation: empathy with their ignorant zeal vs. 2
c)What was their zeal without knowledge? 3 For not knowing about God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God.
d)Israel missed that: “Christ is the end of the law for righteousness” to the believer vs 4.
e)Christ is the goal, end result and fulfillment of the Law for righteousness to the one who believes.

II - Israel Rejected The Righteousness of the Gospel
a)The Problem for the Jews: From Jared Reed
“(1) The problem for the Jews is that the way of righteousness that they have followed came from God
(2)How can there be another way to be righteous other than as the Law prescribes?
(3)But Paul argues that they have misunderstood (knowledge) and have acted incorrectly (action)”

b)The parallel between Law & Gospel 5-8
•Paul quotes Moses in Dt 30.
c)This was the Word of Faith Paul preached (along with Moses) 9-13
•Confess with your mouth
1.He is Lord
2.Raised from the dead – cf 1:5
3.You shall be saved.
4.Faith lies in the heart
5.The mouth confession

Two implications:
a)Faith is publicly affirmed
b)Faith can be articulated.
•The Scripture promise - v11
•The grounds v12
•The universal promise and offer of the gospel vs 13

CONCLUSION: Faith in Jesus is both objective and subjective. What and who is Jesus to you?
