In addition to Joshua's charge to divide the land to the twelve tribes of Israel (chs.13-19), now he was also to appoint the remaining three cities of refuge in Canaan with another 42 cities on both sides of Jordan, which the LORD promised to the Levites. The Levites receiving a total of 48 cities.
