Sons and Daughters of God

45

In this text numerous proofs and evidences are given by which the believer may know and be assures of their adoption. The first evidence that adoption has taken place is the leading or driving of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit dwells within the hearts of Christ’s redeemed leading His saints to greater knowledge and love of God. In coming to Christ, his people receive the spirit of adoption in contrast to a spirit of slavery or bondage. In this spirit of adoption the believer is enabled to cry out Abba to the father expressing familial intimacy. In addition, the Holy Spirit bears witness to the inner spirit of the saint assuring them and testifying to them. This bearing witness encompasses the mystical experience of the faith becoming the infallible testimony of the truth of the things believed. Suffering is the final proof described in this text by which the Lord’s people may be assured of their adoption, and this proof may come in two ways. The troubles of this world may come in the form of persecution for the sake of the gospel. The second form of suffering is in the chastening and refining of the heart through God’s discipline. It is a comfort and testimony that suffering produces righteousness.
