SHOWING GODLINESS TOWARD OTHERS IN THE BODY OF CHRIST—PART II

Main Idea: We need to support our widows!

• We need to honor our widows (5:3)
 Honor your mother and father (Ex 20:12; Deut 5:16)
 Encourage older women as mothers (1 Tim 5:2)
• We need to honor our “widows indeed”/“enrolled on the list” (5:3, 5, 9-16)
 Qualifications
▪ Positive
• Sets her hope on God (5)
• Continues in supplication and prayer (5)
• Wife of one husband (a “one-man-woman”) (9)
• Reputation for good works (10)
• Has raised children (10)
• Has shown hospitality (10)
• Has washed the feet of saints (10)
• Has cared for the afflicted (10)
• Has devoted herself to every good work (10)
• Has made a pledge to say single and to serve (12)
▪ Negative
• No relatives to support her (4, 8, 16)
• Not self-indulgent (5)
• Not less than 60 years of age (9)
• Not a young widow (11-15)
 Duties
▪ Young widows: marry, bear children, manage households, give adversary no occasion for slander (14-15)

• Responsibilities of caregivers (church and family)
 For widows: families of widows (16b)
 For “widows indeed”: the Church (3-4, 16a)
