Dead with Christ, Alive with the Spirit

Paul sounds exasperated with the believers in Galatia. Jesus had been publicly portrayed as crucified through the preaching of the cross and, in response, they had trusted the finished work of Christ for their justification. Now they had turned to another gospel. Were they bewitched? He exhorts them to recall the working of the Holy Spirit in their midst, the presence of whom was the fruit of faith not works of the law. The Spirit was responsible for their initiation into the covenant and it would be the Spirit who would bring them through to completion. It was foolish of them to think that this was something they could do in their own strength.
